jacobkevin asked: I knew you would reblog that photo! The Bay Bridge is absolutely beautiful; the Golden Gate gets too much press.

Geotweeps Discuss...: Fear the quake, ignore the... →
geotweeps-discuss: Another day, another example of California quake fear-mongering, in the form of a piece ‘reporting’ on a paper just published in Nature Geoscience. “ Weather Channel has a “monster quake to come” article about San Andreas. You /know/ some people will take that as imminent…

Tentative San Franthropomorphism calendar plan
I had enough positive response to the personified San Francisco landmarks calendar idea that I’ve decided to go ahead with it. It may be June, but I figure this might be a longish-term project, so I should get going! Here’s a tentative list of who I’ll be including, in no particular order: Golden Gate Bridge Bay Bridge Sutro Tower Coit Tower Cable cars F-Market historic...

I’ve been paying more attention to my appearance lately, both in terms of what I’m wearing and how much I weigh. These are not things I’ve paid much attention to in the past, because I wasn’t objectionable at either one. Just not particularly good-looking. It occurred to me only very recently that I may be focusing more on this all of a sudden as a way to deflect from...

Debating on whether or not I should try and meet up with the asexual group at San Francisco Pride. I’ve never really met anyone else who’s asexual, and I know there’s a group here, but goodness am I awkward with the whole groups thing. And would inviting myself to this thing (since it’s not a huge group) be awkward since I’ve never met any of these folks and since I...

So, I’m in San Francisco this week, and it’s already been a very productive time. I got here on Monday night, and in the past two days, I’ve written a conference abstract and travel grant application for that conference, as well as most of the draft of a journal article. I expect to finish that draft today, and I hope to also get around to commenting on the draft of a paper on...

Enthusiasm For Heat
fakescience: The site-specific version of this curve for Riverside, California, is a little different. It reaches its peak in January, when it is rainy and 55 and people are freaking out about how cold it is. It plateaus for a little while, until that anomalous 90-degree late-February day when people realize that, if it’s this hot in February, August will be murder. From there, it is a...

Places I'm going this summer...
Definitely San Francisco (as many times as I can manage!) Los Angeles (though this barely counts as travel) Chicago Pittsburgh Washington DC Portland (Oregon) Vancouver (Washington) Seattle Palm Springs (yes, in summer) If I have enough money to travel beyond those places Sidney (British Columbia) Vancouver (British Columbia) Victoria (British Columbia) If I get accepted to the...

if you do not know the difference between the bay...
lianaloves: seriously. they’re not even the same color!  YES. And they also do not get points for being disappointed by finding out the grey one is “only” the Bay Bridge. It is a beautiful and important structure in its own right! Poor thing has a complex about that.

Polling the audience...
Would it be obnoxiously spammy if I uploaded some older (ie. within the past year) drawings I’ve done of personified San Francisco landmarks? If it isn’t obnoxious, would it at least be of interest? Or should I just stick to uploading drawings only when I have new stuff?

jacobkevin asked: Holy shit. Your blog is awesome. A: I used to want to be a volcanologist SO BAD. I spent all of childhood/adolescence buried in geology books pining to be like Maurice and Katia Krafft, minus the killed-by-your-work aspect. B: I love love love San Francisco. I'm moving to Oakland in August if all goes well; it all depends on me getting into school.
