Secret San Francisco: The Golden Fire Hydrant | 7x7

gaelen:

“In honor of their epic fight, the fire hydrant was painted gold. Every year on the anniversary of the earthquake, the hydrant receives a fresh coat of paint from the Fire Chief and local residents at 5:12 a.m. (the exact time of earthquake hit).”

Yay for the golden fire hydrant!

Though it’s actually closer to 6 AM by the time the hydrant gets its paint, since the moment of silence at 5:12 has everyone still gathered at Lotta’s Fountain at Kearny, Geary, and Market. But, there was no daylight savings time in 1906, so their 5:12 is more like our 6:12 in terms of light, so there we go!
